Obituary

Writer, historian and activist Howard Zinn, 87, died Jan. 28 of a heart attack in Los Angeles. Zinn was born to a Jewish immigrant family in Brooklyn. Eager to fight Fascism, he joined the Army Air Force during World War II and was assigned as a bombardier in the 490th Bombardment Group, bombing targets in Berlin, Czechoslovakia and Hungary—experiences which informed, in part, his later anti-war stance. Zinn became a key intellectual in the 1950s and ”˜60s civil rights movement and wrote extensively about racism and equal rights. He also wrote one of the earliest academic works calling for withdrawal from Vietnam in 1967. More recently, the author of A People’s History of the United States was perhaps better known as an outspoken critic of the war in Iraq and Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. A founding member of Jewish Voice of Peace, Zinn supported the civil disobedience of Israeli peace activists and spoke out on behalf of human rights everywhere.
