Waging Peace

AAPER Marches for Gaza

The American Association for Palestinian Rights (AAPER) staged its first West Coast demonstration on Oct. 10, with a silent march through Westwood to inform the public of the hardships being endured by the people of Gaza.

Lillie Kasim and Samar Habibi recruited about 40 marchers for the event. All wore T-shirts with an image of Israel’s apartheid wall and the statement: “Freedom and Equality for Palestine.” The group also carried a banner with the same image and slogan as on the T-shirts.

As they marched on the sidewalks of Westwood, the activists were led by two supporters carrying huge Palestinian flags. Participants handed out flyers listing facts about the Israeli occupation of Gaza and the West Bank. One handmade sign summed up the purpose of the march: “Children Can’t Walk Safely to Their Schools in Gaza So We Walk for Them.”
