"From Occupation to Apartheid: Israel, South Africa and the
'New World Order,"' a conference organized by the Middle East

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee will hold its Amman

AMBASSADORIAL APPOINTMENT
Former US Ambassador to Syria Edward P. Djerejian has been named
to succeed John H. Kelly as assistant secretary of state for Near
Eastern and South Asian Affairs. Before being appointed ambassador
to Syria in 1988, Djerejian, a career foreign service officer, was
deputy assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern and South Asian
Affairs. He has also served in Amman, Jordan and in Moscow.
OPPORTUNITIES
Emory University's recently-established Department of Near Eastern
and Judaic Languages and Literatures is seeking applicants for an
associate or full professor who will serve as chair of the department.
Candidates should send a letter of interest, curriculum vitae and
at least five references to Chair Search Committee, Near Eastern

The United States Institute of Peace invites applications for its
1992 Solicited Grants program. Proposals are sought on the following
topics of the Special Middle East Program: the likely future course
of political/social dynamics in the Arab world and in major Arab
countries; ways to enhance prospects for a peaceful settlement of
the Arab-Israeli conflict; potential and prospects for increased
influence in Middle East political and economic affairs, including
Arab-Israeli relations; and long-range security requirements in
the Persian Gulf region. Preference is given to proposals from institutions.
