2 Lebanon: What's Gone Wrong?—Perhaps
if the Administration had made up its own mind about what was wrong
in Lebanon and had then had the political courage to back up its
convictions, the U.S. might not be in its present predicament there.
Read why.
4 Israel: Economy in Trouble—Trying to figure
out what he will do next in Lebanon and the West Bank is not the
only problem that will face Mr. Begin's successor. He will also
have to work out ways to keep Israel's economy from going bust.
4 Lobby Activities—Over
1,000 Arab Americans took part in the recent commemoration in Washington
of the 1963 civil rights march of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.-carrying
with them banners which made their presence difficult to miss. Meanwhile,
there has not been any let-up in the year-old drive by two pro-Israel
groups to persuade the public that television's coverage of Israel's
invasion of Lebanon was unfair to Israel.

2 Editorial—We
wish we could feel that the departure of Mr. Begin will cause a
significant shift in the prospects for peace between Israel and
the Arabs. But we can't.

7 Book Review—It's
hard to imagine a book more timely than this one that has just come
on the market: The Republic of Lebanon: Nation in Jeopardy, by history
professor David C. Gordon. According to our reviewer, Professor
Gordon "has done a remarkably clear job" of explaining
just who the forces are that are vying with one another in that
unhappy country.
8 Personality—It's
not that uncommon to find people who feel equally at home in two
different cultures. But only a rare few have the sixth sense, and
the skills, to act as a bridge for mutual understanding between
one culture and another. Among them is Isa Khalil Sabbagh. If you
don't believe us, you might try asking, say, former Presidents Nixon,
Ford, or Carter. |
