EXHIBITS

"Mesopotamia: A Cultural Perspective," an exhibit of the culture, history and art of the people of Iraq, will be on view in the rotunda of Congress' Cannon House Office Building in Washington, DC, July 8-19. The exhibition "Islamic Art and Patronage: Selections from Kuwait" will be shown at the Emory University Museum of Art and Architecture in Atlanta (through Sept. 22); the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond (Nov. 5, 1991-Jan. 19, 1992); and the St. Louis Museum of Art (Feb. 15-Apr. 12, 1992). (The exhibit was on tour outside Kuwait when Iraq invaded. It contains priceless museum treasures that might otherwise have been lost.)

The University of Washington announces a tenure-track position in modern and Ottoman Turkish, to begin fall 1992. Candidates should have a Ph.D. and be qualified to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in Turkish language, culture and civilization. The University of Georgia seeks a tenure-track assistant professor of Islam, to begin fall 1992. The Institute of Islamic Studies of McGill University seeks an established scholar to teach and conduct and direct research in Islamic philosophy and ideology. HONORS

The American University in Cairo has established the Frank G. Wisner Award for Scholarly Excellence in Egyptian Studies in honor of the departing US ambassador to Egypt. Ambassador Wisner was also presented with a Presidential Medal in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the "advancement of knowledge and cross-cultural understanding. " The AUC Presidential Medal has been presented once before, in 1988, to Nobel Prize-winning Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz.

The 1991 King Faisal International Prize for Service to Islam has been awarded to His Excellency Dr. Abd Allah Omar Naseef, secretary general of the World Muslim League. The 1991 Prize for Islamic Literature was awarded to Egyptian children's authors Ahmad Mahmoud Najeeb and Abd-Attawab Yousef Ahmad, and to Moroccan poet Ali Abd Al Qadir Al-Siqilli.

OBITUARIES

Renowned Egyptian singer and composer Mohammed Abdel Wahab died in Cairo May 3 of a heart attack at the age of 90. Known as the "Musician of the Generations," Abdel Wahab began his career as a singer and later studied at Cairo's Institute of Oriental Music. He composed some of the most inspiring patriotic songs of the Arab world, including "Palestine ... .. Damascus" and "The Eternal Nile." He also wrote scores for the late Orn Kalthoum and composed the Egyptian national anthem.

Fouad A. Habiby, an international airline consultant and former chairman of UNITAG USA, died of a heart attack May 18, at the age of 61, at his home in Washington, DC. Born in Haifa, he worked in the travel business throughout the Arab world. He moved to Washington in 1984, where he was vice president of the International Student House and a founder and vice president of the American-Bahraini Friendship Committee. Survivors include his wife, Nadira, a son and two daughters.

IRAQI RELIEF

The Catholic Near East Welfare Association, an international papal agency headquartered in New York, is coordinating the "Iraq Relief Line," weekly truck convoys of food supplies to 25 villages in north central Iraq. The project, which has been approved by the Iraqi government, is expected to continue through July, when the need will be great due to heat-related diseases and lack of a harvest.
