A Night of Kuwaiti Folklore
On May 5, the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies and the Kuwait
Information Office hosted Kuwait’s renowned Television Folklore
Troupe for an evening honoring musical folklore traditions of Kuwait.
The troupe invoked various folkloric styles, which are traditionally
used to celebrate a multitude of occasions such as weddings, religious
gatherings, return of sailors from fishing or pearling trips, nomadic
travels, or preparations for wars. Some styles were reflective of
the various themes which have developed over time to become prominent
symbols of Kuwaiti culture.
In an effort to preserve its folkloric traditions, the State of
Kuwait has been sending the Folklore Troupe and its members to participate
at musical festivals around the world.
