2 U.S.-Egypt: Crumbling
Alliance?—The way things are going now, the U.S.
and Egypt may soon find that their interests no longer converge
as much as they did. Yet the U.S. has made an enormous investment
in Egypt on the assumption that it will be its major Arab partner
in the search for peace in the Middle East.
4 Iran-Iraq
War: The Lineup—As Iraqis and Iranians head for
a showdown in their 20-month-old war, it's a good time for a refresher
on just which countries are supporting which side, and how. All
of them will be affected by the eventual outcome.
4 Coping With Lower
Revenues—Although revenues from oil are now lower
in the Gulf, there are still plenty of opportunities for foreign
exporters and contractors. But U.S. businessmen face some special
problems.
5 Lobby Activities—NAAA
has held its tenth annual convention in Boston, providing guidance
and information for its supporters in their grass-roots lobbying
efforts. On the pro-Israel side, a Los Angeles businessman is said
to have emerged as the principal liaison of the U.S. Jewish community
with the White House.

Educational Trust expresses a few thoughts on two recent occurrences:
a threat against the Editor of this newsletter, and a physical assault
upon another person from AET.

7 Book Review—William
B. Quandt chose Saudi Arabia and its problems as the subject of
his most recent book in part, at least, because he believes that
"few foreign policy matters deserve higher priority in Washington."
He handles the complex subject concisely, lucidly and in a non-polemical
tone.
8 Personality—Peter
J. Tanous does not exactly fit the stereotyped image of the gray,
anonymous banker who is indistinguishable from the rest of his colleagues
on Wall Street. For one thing, he writes novels. For another, he
is the head of the only Arab-controlled investment bank with a seat
on the New York Stock Exchange.
