2 King Hussein
is RightOnce again, as so often in the
past, King Hussein has reacted to misguided and ineffective U.S.
policies by telling the Administration that he will not play a role
in them because they are misguided and ineffective. And once again,
Administration officials call him "weak" and "inconsistent."
The record, however, shows that the shoe is on the other foot.
4 Israel:
The Economic CrisisIsrael's prime minister
Shamir has his work cut out for him. By July 23, when national elections
are to take place, he has to convince the voters that his economic
policy is not a disaster. It won't be easy.
5 Lobby ActivitiesThe
Administration's announced cancellation of the Stingers for Jordan
and Saudi Arabia came as no surprise to the American Israel Public
Affairs Committee—it had met secretly with U.S. officials
to decide the fate of the proposed sales. When the National Association
of Arab Americans got word of all this, they came out with a blunt
warning to the Administration.

2 EditorialSometimes,
Administration spokesmen talk like the marching soldier's mother
who notes that "everybody is out of step except Johnnie."
A recent statement on the Middle East by a very important official
reflects this myopia.

7 Book ReviewOur
reviewer tells us that Roberta Strauss Feuerlicht's The Fate of
the Jews: A People Tom Between Israeli Power and Jewish Ethics is
a very important book. But he also has an interesting story to tell
about the fate of The Fate of the Jews.
8 PersonalityHow
often does a starry-eyed teenager grow up to become the very sort
of person he had fantasized about becoming? We certainly couldn't
tell you but we do know it happened to Youssef Ibrahim, and that
the odds against its happening seemed quite improbable. |
