ANNOUNCEMENTS
Robert H. Pelletreau Jr., 53, has been picked by Secretary
of State Shultz to be the sole authorized contact between the United
States and the Palestine Liberation Organization. Pelletreau, who
speaks Arabic and French, currently is ambassador to Tunisia. He
was deputy assistant secretary of state for near east and south
asian affairs from 1983-85, and was ambassador to Bahrain, 1979-80.
He also has served in Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Lebanon, Jordan,
and Syria.
President Reagan announced a number of recess appointments
in December, including E. Michael Ussery as ambassador to Morocco.
Ussery, who succeeds Thomas A. Nassif, has been deputy assistant
secretary of state for Near Eastern and South Asian affairs since
1986.

The American Institute for Yemeni Studies announced the
opening of competition for its USIA Fellowship, which is open to

UCLA's Department of History and the von Grunebaum Center for
Near Eastern Studies announced the Malcolm Kerr Memorial Research
Lectureship, a one-year award for persons completing Ph.D.s between

Cornell University's Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships are

POSITION VACANCIES
The Middle East Studies Association (MESA) seeks a new editor
for the International Journal of Middle East Studies (IJMES)
for the five year term from Jan. 1, 1990 to Dec. 31, 1994. The
editor should be an internationally recognized scholar of Middle

The Department of History of the University of California,
Santa Barbara, invites applications and recommendations of distinguished

The Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University,

CONFERENCES
The Center for Middle Eastern Studies, at the University
of Texas at Austin, plans to convene an academic conference March
9-11 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Iraqi revolution
of 1958.
The seventh annual conference of the Center for Iranian Research
and Analysis (CIRA), cosponsored by the Middle East Institute,
Columbia University, will take place in April 1989. The theme of
the conference will be "The Islamic Republic of Iran: Ten Years
After the Revolution." Papers on all aspects of contemporary
Iran are welcomed.
"Research on Contemporary Tunisia," an international
conference, will be held at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International
Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC April 7-8 (tentative).
TRAVEL
Egypt National Tours has announced an educational tour of
Egypt and Morocco, March 18-25. In Egypt the group will visit historic
sites in Giza, Memphis, Sakkara as well as mosques and bazaars in
old Cairo. Moroccan highlights will include palaces, tombs, the
kasbah in Marrakesh, and the royal palace, harem gardens and the
