Interpreting North America for the Middle East
Special Reports
1 Policy,
A former government official explains why the stew of Lebanese
politics is coming out with an increasingly radical flavor every
time the Middle East pot is stirred.
2 Editorial,
Humphrey, Jr. strode into the office the other day, walking
tall and talking tough about sanctions against Libya. Miz took time
out to educate him on the difference between striking out blindly
at the symptoms of terrorism and dealing with its causes. Getting
Junior to buy a reasonable argument proved to be easier than getting
him to buy his own lunch.
4 Government,
You don't have to make big campaign contributions or own a newspaper
to get your representative to lend you an ear on our current Mideast
policy. If you want to go off lobbying on your own, read Mitch Kaidy's
advice on how to do it.
5 Update on Congress,
Congressional election years tend to cloud the vision of our Mideast
policymakers and produce a shower of dollars for Israel up on the
Hill. Dennis Wamsted doesn't think 1986 will be any different, and
predicts stormy weather for Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq and also
for every recipient of U.S. foreign aid except Israel.
6 Trade and Finance,
As the Iran-Iraq war continues to devour the youth of both nations,
the antagonists are also squandering a precious opportunity to prepare
their economies for the future.
7 Lobbies and Activists,
Joan Peters' 1984 book, From Time Immemorial provoked controversy
among members of the Jewish community last month. Meanwhile, prominent
Jews joined Arab American leaders in denouncing recent attacks against
the ADC and the spread of the Mideast conflict to the U.S.
11 Personality,
Passionate Prophet Haviv Schieber, like Jeremiah and John
Brown before him, may find History to be his kindest judge.
11 Book Review,
For those who want a better understanding of the Islamic
fundamentalist movement sweeping the contemporary Middle East, Robert
Hazo recommends reading Robin Wright's new book, Sacred Rage,
and adds a few insights of his own.
